Valco Flagstone is selected for it's quality to accept the inks without bleeding. The stone is shaped 'naturally', honoring it's innate strengths, beauty, and natural faults.
Preliminary sketches are done using your photographs. Of paramount importance is the 'joining' of the subject matter to the stone. They must be one and visually meant to be together.
Your stone is prepared to accept the ink, scrubbed, rough and fine sanded, and finally polished.
I mix archival quality and permanent inks using an India ink base. The ink is layered on the stone using architectural drafting pens and stainless steel nibs in a cross-hatch technique. The building-up of layers of ink creates
depth and contrast. Your stone is left to breath and accept the inks between layers.
If specified, your personal message is inked on the back of the stone in illuminated calligraphy. The piece is signed and dated.
A fixative is applied, and once dried, a triple glaze is used to seal and protect your piece. It is recommended a UV protectant be applied if your stone will be exposed to natures elements.
