The Process
- You provide the photographs, completed order form, and 1/2 payment.
Photos can be emailed.
- Valco Flagstone is selected for it's quality to accept the inks without
bleeding. The stone is shaped 'naturally', honoring it's innate
strengths, beauty, and natural faults.
- Preliminary sketches are done using your photographs. Of paramount
importance is the 'joining' of the subject matter to the stone...they must
be one and visually meant to be together.
- Your stone is prepared to accept the ink, scrubbed, rough and fine
sanded, and finally polished.
- I mix archival quality and permanent inks using an India ink base.
The ink is layered on the stone using architectural drafting pens and
stainless steel nibs in a cross-hatch technique. The building-up of
layers of ink creates depth and contrast. Your stone is left to breath
and accept the inks between layers.
- If specified, your personal message is inked on the back of the stone in
illuminated calligraphy. The piece is signed and dated.
- A fixative is applied, and once dried, a triple glaze is used to seal
and protect your piece. It is recommended a UV protectant be applied
if your stone will be exposed to natures elements.
