The Process:
- You provide a photograph and complete the Custom Order Form. This
form, your pictures, and half down-payment are then mailed to me.
Photos may be emailed to me as well.
- Valco Flagstone is selected for it's quality to accept the inks without
bleeding. The stone is shaped naturally, honoring it's innate
strengths, beauty, and natural faults.
- Preliminary sketches are done using your photographs. Of paramount
importance is 'joining' your subject matter to the stone - they must be one
and visually meant to be together.
- Your stone is then prepared to accept the ink. It is scrubbed,
rough and fine sanded, and finally a polish is applied.
- I mix archival-quality and permanent inks using an India ink base.
The ink is layered on the stone using architectural drafting pens and
stainless steel nubs in a crosshatch technique. The building up of the
layers on ink creates depth and contrast. Your stone is left to breath
and accept the ink between layers.
- If specified, your personal message is placed on the back of the stone
in illuminated calligraphy. The piece is signed and dated.
- A fixative is applied...and once dried, a triple glaze is used to seal
and protect your piece. It is recommended that a UV protectant be
applied if your stone will be exposed to natural elements.
The piece of fine art is ready for display! No matt, frames, glass,
hooks, nails, wire, or hangers are needed. It's sculptural and natural
beauty can be displayed anywhere...
- Fireplace hearth or mantel stones
- Executive paperweights
- Table or shelf fine art sculpture
- Fine art door or porch welcoming stones
Care:
All stones are sealed with a triple glaze for protection. It is
strongly recommended a UV protectant be applied if your piece will be exposed to
natural elements. As with any piece of fine art, care in handling should
be followed. Simply dust your piece as necessary and if needed, a
water-wet cloth can be used.
